The DDR was, in many ways, the most successful Communist state. The standard of living of its citizens was among the highest in the world, and its education, health and social welfare system were second to none. It achieved all this, even though it had practically no natural resources and suffered constant subversion and terrorist attack from the Fascist West German state and its NATO allies.
