Well done to everybody who turned out in Cabra today and prevented the sheriff from evicting a family from their home.

An Spréach were present among such other groups as The Hub Ireland, The Land League, Anti-Eviction Ireland, who together with up to 70 other people present throughout the day, stood in solidarity in the torrential downpour, preventing the eviction from ever taking place.

The bailiff & sheriff have been thwarted for now—the people remain on standby.

Angry neighbours stopped bailiffs from evicting a devastated family of four from their home today.

Local residents were outraged that bailed out AIB were trying to throw the Killeen family out on the street despite them paying e700 a month on their mortgage.

More than 60 people braved torrential rain to protest outside the terraced house on Carnlough Road, Cabra, Dublin preventing the Sheriff from evicting the family.

Last night their supporters mounted a vigil in case the bailiffs came back after dark.

The family, which includes an 18-month-old baby, have been doing their best to pay back arrears.

But AIB, which bankrupted itself through reckless lending, went to court to repossess their home.

William Killeen, who celebrated his 51st birthday today, said they had made every possible effort to pay arrears in a desperate bid to keep their home.

He said: “This is some birthday present to have the Sheriff coming to your door to put you out on the street but that’s Ireland for you today.

“We have tried to reason with AIB but they don’t want to know they just want our house.

“I’ve been paying them e500 a month on the loan and another e200 off the interest and they don’t want to know, they just want us out.”

Supporters massed on the street outside and occupied the front garden preventing the Sheriff and his bailiffs from staging a raid.

They were helped by members of the reformed Land League which has compared the present spate of repossessions to the mass evictions of tenant farmers in the late 19th Century.

The Killeen family locked themselves inside their house after receiving a letter from Sheriff Kevin Barry that he would be around to evict them at 12pm.

But the bailiffs failed to show after a huge crowd had gathered and there were reporters from several national newspapers.

William’s daughter Kirsty, 24, who shares the house with her 18-month old son and 14-year old sister said she was terrified they would be thrown out on the street.

She said: “We have just nowhere to got if they take the house off us. We just want to keep our family home. How can they do something like this, what kind of society are we living in?”
