Art of the French Revolution

Recommended Posts

The sans-culottes of Paris storm the Tuilieres palace and topple the French monarchy, August 10, 1792. This action was in response a Prussian general's threat to burn Paris to the ground if the royal family was harmed. A ferocious battle ensued as the army of 20,000 men and women from the slums of Paris fought about 1,000 royalist mercenaries, armed with cannons, for control of the palace. 400 of the attacking Republicans died, the royalists were overwhelmed by sheer numbers and massacred to a man. The beggining of the radical Jacobin phase of the French Revolution.
