Btw, how did you find the book by Antonio Negri?

I started the Negri book, but the language was a little dense and I didn't persevere, but I've been meaning to get back to it for a while, I've a feeling there's some important stuff in it, especially in relation to how to build global structures to resist Empire. I haven't read the People's History Book either, even though its been sitting there for nearly 10 years lol

There's a great book, with a similar theme to Zinn's, but relating to South America, Open Veins of Latin America, by Eduardo Galleano, I don't have a copy, but its a fantastic read, his style is beautiful, even when translated from the Spanish. I have that trilogy of his which deal with the subject too, although its more like poetry at times than a simple historical account, it makes it really powerful though. The Open Veins book though is more factual, but the facts involved are pretty powerful by themselves.

The Oxfam shop in Swansea has the best collection of second hand books I've ever seen. There was loads I wanted to buy, at very good prices, but the weight limit on the plane meant I had to be careful about my choices. Anyway, here are some books, in random order, I did get that should be of interest to the comrades:

The Prison Letters of Fidel Castro

No Logo - Naomi Klein

The Clash of Fundamnetalisms - Tariq Ali

Propaganda and Empire, the manipulation of British public opinion 1880 - 1960 John M. MacKensie

Hitchcock on Hitchcock - edited by Sidney Gottlieb

Communism and Development - Robert Bideleux

The Self and Others - R.D. Laing

Without Conscience, The disturbing world of the psychopaths among us - Robert D. Hare

The Politics - Aristotle

Globalization and its Discontents - Roger Burbach et al.

The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism - Max Weber

The Good Society - J.K. Galbraith

Psychosynthesis - Roberto Assagioli

Bursts - Albert-Laszlo Barabasi

Hetrosexuality, A Feminism and Psychology Reader - edited by Sue Wilkinson and Celia Kitzinger

The Workers and Peasants State, Communism and Society in East Germany under Ulbricht 1945 - 71 ed. Patrick Major

Age of Propaganda, Everyday Use and Abuse of Persuasion - ed. Anthony Pratkanis

Left Wing Communism, An Infantile Disorder - V.I. Lenin

Lenin, Selected Works 5 - On Nationalism

Over the last few years I have been trawling the charity and second hand book shops of this land for various titles from the Left Book Club of the 1930s and 40s.  You can spot them from their red or orange covers.  They are fascinating reading and provide, in my opinion, a snapshot of the pure and unspoilt socialism of that period.  Victor Gollancz, the LBC publisher, broke with the Communist Party of Great Britain after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact in 1939.  Authors that contributed to the series include George Orwell, Clement Attlee and John Strachey.

Another series of books to look out for are those by Progress Publishers which were printed in Moscow in the 70s and 80s.  I have a collection of essays by Marx, Engels and Lenin from them called On Communist Society.  I also have a biography of Lenin that was written in 1932 by James Maxton.  It is part of a series called Men of Destiny but I haven't seen any of the other titles, it would be interesting to see who else was considered a Man of Destiny back then.

I have a "Marx: Selected Works" from progress publishers. Printed in 1991 I think. I got it from Easons of all places in O Connell Street a couple of years back.

There must be a warehouse somewhere with mint condition unsold progress publishers books!

Here's a list of most of the leftist theory books in my collection. There are probably a few more but I tend to leave them in various rooms and then forget where I put them. I can't find my copy of Strachey's Theory and Practice of Socialism for instance and I would consider it recommended reading. Where you see a date that is the date of the edition I possess not the year of original printing. I have included Henry George's Progress and Poverty from 1879, even though it is not a Marxist work it was years ahead of its time back then and would still be considered pretty much left wing today.

Left Book Club Anthology - Paul Laity
A Faith to Fight For - John Strachey (LBC 1941)
The Theory and Practice of Socialism - John Strachey (LBC 1936)
A Programme for Progress - John Strachey (LBC 1940)

On Communist Society - Marx, Engels, Lenin (Progress Publishers)
On The Emancipation of Women - Lenin (PP)
The Proletarian Revolution and the Renegade Kautsky - Lenin (PP)
On Soviet Socialist Democracy - Lenin (PP)

The Working Class -Vanguard Of The World Revolutionary Forces - Academy of Sciences of the USSR Institute of the International Working Class Movement (1970)

The Theory and Practice of Communism - RN Carew Hunt (Pelican 1971)

Reform or Revolution - Rosa Luxemburg (Pathfinder 1973)

Politics and Class - edited by Neville Woodhead (GW&A Hesketh 1985)

Inside The Whale and Other Essays - George Orwell (Penguin Books)

The Socialist Tradition from Crisis to Decline - Carl Boggs (Routledge 1995)

Renewing Socialism - Democracy, Strategy and Imagination - Leo Panitch (Westview 2001)

Progress and Poverty - Henry George (Schalkenback 1998)
